This week, The Conjuring gets a sequel, the cast for Christopher Nolan's Interstellar grows and Jamie Foxx gets electrified! Welcome to The Zipp! Report for the week of July 21st.
-Successful horror films have two things in common. They usually make most of their money in the first weekend and the profitable ones almost always get sequels. In that vain, it was announced earlier this week that a sequel to this weekend’s The Conjuring is in early production. The sequel will be written by the original's writers, Carey and Chad Hayes, and will again be directed by James Wan (Saw, Insidious).
-According to Entertainment Weekly, actors John Lithgow, Ellen Burstyn and Mackenzie Foy have joined the cast of Christopher Nolan’s wormhole adventure Interstellar. The three will be a nice addition to the cast that already includes Matthew McConaughey, Anne Hathaway, Jessica Chastain, Casey Affleck and constant Nolan collaborator, Michael Caine.
-The currently in production Veronica Mars movie seems to be a big deal in the news these days. The film which started as a Kickstarter campaign and is based on the cult classic television show won’t be released until 2014. After the film is released, creator Rob Thomas and Alloy Entertainment will be releasing two novels which will be a bridge between the film and any potential sequels. The first book will be released on February 4, 2014.
Weekend Box Office
- The Conjuring - $41.5 Million
- Despicable Me 2 - $25 Million
- Turbo - $21.5 Million
- Grown Ups 2 - $20 Million
- Red 2 - $18 Million
The Conjuring is another big hit for director James Wan who has had a great career since his first film Saw came out in 2004. Not only did that movie begin the "torture porn" revolution but it also made a terrific $55.2 Million. After that he made Insidious which cost $1.5 Million and made $54 Million. This weekend's The Conjuring continues his success trend with its $41.5 Million debut from a $20 Million budget. Wan will also be directing the next Fast & Furious movie. The other new releases, Turbo, Red 2 and R.I.P.D failed to really make a splash.
-This week Sony disclosed some never seen footage of the upcoming superhero film The Amazing Spider-Man 2. In the clip below, Jamie Foxx's Electro gets a taste of that sweet, sweet electricity. The sequel will swing into theaters on May 2, 2014.
